I want to self harm tonight. What should I do to calm down?

First of all, I’m sorry if you sent this hours ago. I haven’t been online since this morning! Also, thank you so much for asking me instead of keeping it to yourself, that means a lot. <3

Here’s my personal list of what I do if I’m feeling that urge or if I’m having a bad night:

-Take a long, hot bath. Play music during it if you can; since I have a laptop I like to set up a playlist of funny videos and just put the laptop on the counter to play while I bathe.

-Just straight up listen to music. Music is such a useful tool, though purposefully avoid sad/triggering music. Play something silly, lighthearted, or uplifting.

-If you have a pet, take them into your room and just spend some time petting them and loving them. It can be too hard to tell a person how you feel, but an animal can be just what you need to vent to and hug.

-Draw with crayons. I don’t know why, but drawing specifically with crayons puts me in a good mood. Draw something so cliche or stereotypical, like a sunny day. Or draw something deep and emotional that will help release some pent up emotion.

-Write a letter to someone explaining everything you’re feeling, though shred it up and throw it away when you’re done. Whatever you want to say to them, say it. You have no obligation to send it or show it to anyone, ever.

-Watch a funny movie/TV show/video. Sometimes just distracting yourself if the best thing to do, and when you calm down or feel less triggered, you can deal with the emotions.

I hope at least one of these works for you, and I want you to know that you’re always welcome to come talk to me or just vent at me. You can do this, whatever you’re up against. <3
