This is an important point to pick up as names in East and South East Asia are often made fun of, and adopting a Japanese or Korean name if you are not Japanese or Korean is, quite frankly, stupid. Don’t use it just to sound ‘kawaii’ or seem like you are of Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Filipino, Thai, Vietnamese and other Asian ethnicities’ descent. Appropriation of languages and culture has been a huge problem of people into anime and k-pop, so I would like to tell everyone why it’s wrong to do it. Language isNOT AN ACCESSORY. You cannot use a language to seem cool or cute to anyone. We speak a certain language, and we have words for it in our own, so why would you bother using another language? It doesn’t sound cute or cool at all, stop it. We have the words “wife” and “husband” in English so stop with the “waifu” and “husbando” shit. Don’t even use “-chan”, “-san”, “-kun” and honorifics of other languages because it is not for appropriation. “But I’m only saying ‘kawaii’ as a way to make fun of weeaboos!” That further worsens it because all you’re doing is using it as an asshole. Weeaboos use it as an accessory, so call them out, but don’t further ridicule them by appropriating means either. “But my [ethnicity] friend said it’s okay!” Not everyone is okay dealing with imperialistic, racist shit. If they’re okay with it, it can be because of peer pressure or mere disinterest, but they can’t speak for the entire ethnicity they come from, so no this is not a valid excuse for racism and appropriation.
