Monica stood soon after him and began to walk towards the house by Jack’s side. From the corner of her eye, she noticed his fist tighten and a small smile took hold of her pale lips. Jack was so… sweet. So sensitive. She had always liked the stupid jockey boys, the ones who couldn’t care less about their families or their grades, that only cared about hooking up with girls and winning their next games. He was so… different. He cared, he REALLY cared, and had she known there were guys like that, she probably never fallen for the other goons in the first place. Secretly, Monica envied his sensitivity the empathy he had shown to her countless times. “She’s lucky to have such a great grandson.. And I’m sure she’s awesome too! She’s related to you, after all..” She laughed and tucked a lock of hair behind her ear.

He smiled. “I’d like to believe that.” he murmured without thinking in regards to his grandmother being lucky to have him, though he quickly stopped himself. “Er, sorry. That was kind of depressing.” he said with a nervous laugh.

He walked into the house. “I’ll be right back; I’m going to go change. You should probably do the same.” he said, leaning down to give her a peck on the cheek before he headed to his room, changing into lounge pants and a loose T-shirt. He then went back to the living room, happy to see the fireplace was lit and warm. He waited for Monica to join him in the living room, hoping she didn’t think much of his earlier remark.

While she was gone, he thought of the past five or so days, and how he’d gotten to know her. She was so sweet; it’d been quite some time since he put himself out there, and to think he was so lucky to find a girl as sweet as her. He was thankful.

As he pecked her cheek, she hid a smile behind her hand and hurried to her room to change. She threw her wet clothes into the bathtub and slipped on an oversized t-shirt which had belonged to her brother. It reached down to her knees, appearing as a dress on her rather petite body. The flannel pants she wore pooled around her sock covered feet, also very loose on her curvy legs. She tied her hair up into a high bun and skidded back to the living room. It was a rather comical site, a pretty tiny girl drowning in fabric. “Hiiii!” She giggled and eagerly walked over to him.

Jack chuckled softly as she made her appearance. He couldn’t help but think of how adorable she looked in the oversized outfit. “You look quite cozy.” he said, smiling to her. Jack was sitting by the fireplace, happy to be so warm.

Monica wrinkled her nose in a small giggle and dropped to settle next to him, her knees up to her chest. “You know, I just now realized that I thought you were going to die three times on this island already. THREE TIMES! You, mister, need to stop being so close to dying!” She reached up and playfully poked his nose. “But I’m uber glad none of those times actually turned into you dying. Is that really dumb to say? Even if I didn’t like- LIKE LIKE UHM. UHM. LIKE. I SURE like this fire place it’s TOTALLY pretty!” She caught herself right before she revealed her feelings for him, face blazing. Monica secretly knew he could’ve figured where that statement was going if he played it over again in his head, and she silently cursed herself for rambling mindlessly.

Jack gave a sheepish grin. “I’m cured to forever be ridiculously be good at almost dying.” he said jokingly. “I’ll try not to anymore, though. It’d be good for both of our sanity.” he added in a lighthearted tone.

He paused when she interrupted her statement, haphazardly trying to correct herself. «Even if I didn’t like….. hm?» he though to himself, deciphering what she was going to say. «Even if she didn’t like me then? Does she like me now?» he wondered curiously. He looked to the fire, watching embers flicker and burn out. «Is it safe for me to be doing this? I’ll have to tell her the truth if we keep doing this… but how would she react?» such worried flooded his mind. He looked back to Monica, just wanting to enjoy the moment.

"I’m really glad I met you, Monica. It’s kind of strange to suddenly be close to someone; back at home I don’t really talk to anyone, to be honest." he recalled. "I’d almost forgotten what it feels like to have someone." he murmured, blushing. "I mean, to have someone to talk to, you know?"

Monica turned to look up into his eyes as he spoke, and her heart soared as she found herself relating her own life back home to his words. “M-Me either, I don’t really talk to anyone either…!” When he had called her a “someone” her face flushed, but she flinched as he quickly corrected himself and tucked a stray lock of hair up into her loose bun. “Uhm, y-yeah! I totally know what you mean..” Monica’s confidence was beginning to wane. Joking around and flirting was one thing„ but when she really came down to it, Monica was horrible at expressing the way she felt. She had always been really sensitive in the sense, her feelings were hurt easily. But she wasn’t… in touch with them enough to verbally explain how she really felt.. ‘Maybe he doesn’t want this..?’ She wondered to herself, and clasped her trembling hands together.

Jack swallowed hard, nervous as he fumbled for the right words to say. “I don’t really have a way with words, as you’ve probably realized, but I guess what I’m trying to say is…” he paused, not sure how to phrase it. He wanted to curl up and keep his secrets to himself, but part of him wanted to just tell her everything and hope it goes well.

“What I’m trying to say is, I really like you Monica. A lot.” he blushed, pausing every few words as he tried to phrase it right. “I know there’s still a lot we don’t know about each other, but, ah, even with all my faults, I hope you give me a chance.” he paused again. “Did… that make any sense?” he wondered aloud. <<I wonder if she understood what I meant.>> he thought as he replayed his awkward confession in his head.
