Any advice for someone who is scared to get their first job? I have social anxiety and just the thought of getting one scares me.

I’ve only ever had one job, but my mom hires people since she’s owns a restaurant, so here’s some tips I can offer.

1) Asking for applications can be hella nervewracking (having to ask “are you hiring?” and stuff is hard), but a lot of businesses (mainly fast food chains) have online application, where you can either submit it online, or you print it, fill it out, and turn it in at the location.

2) Speaking of going to turn in an application, dress semi-casual. My mom will often determine if someone gets an interview based on what they’re wearing. Sweats and a baggy T-shirt don’t look good. I’d suggest dark jeans, a nice shirt, and if you wear makeup, then a little bit of makeup. Basically just look well-groomed, and not too formal (unless you’re applying for a formal environment).

3) DO NOT SAY YOU CANNOT WORK WEEKENDS. A lot of employers will toss out applications that request weekend off. That looks bad. Look flexible and available.

4) If you get an interview, dress more formal than when you turned in your application. Something you would wear for a nice dinner. If you have a lot of piercings, take some of them out. If you have large tattoos, cover them. People who look like “punks” typically don’t get hired, at least not with the couple of business owners I’ve talked with before.

5) Prepare before you into the interview (Google “most asked interview questions”), and practicing answering questions in the mirror. Practice will make you more prepared, and therefore less nervous, during the actual interview.

6) When you greet the person running the interview, be sure to shake hands. A firm handshake is important. However you normally shake hands, do it tighter and harder; it gives off an air of confidence. Smile and speak clearly, again, this could take practice. Also, sit up straight. You have to be the full package they’re looking for, even if you’re actually not.

That’s all I have off the top of my head. ^^; I hope I helped!
