That’s nice and all, but when you have kids and responsibilities, it’s not so easy.
This comic has always bothered me but I don’t know why.
A part of me wants to buy into this cliche’d nonsense because it actually fills me with hope, but the other part of me is kind of rolling my eyes because this advice is primarily applicable to middle-class/upper-class White children with enough money to throw around should shit hit the fan.
The rest of us can’t afford to pursue things like unpaid internships to gain expertise or go into something that doesn’t guarantee a steady paycheck. It’s breathing privilege.
Besides, the ‘do what you love rhetoric’ is Capitalist fodder. By baiting you into ‘loving it’ so much, it’s trying to distract you from the fact that you have to work and work and work to make a wage. I think it even guilts people who are stuck working minimum wage jobs into loving what they do so they’ll ‘be happy, suck it up, and keep going’.
Plus the whole “It doesn’t take much to live comfortably” as if a home/apartment, food, a laptop, and a PET (with pet care and food!!) doesn’t cost tons of money?? Not to mention that she advocates for starting your own business…umm that costs thousands of dollars to start up and has a high possibility of failing. You’d have to be pretty well off to afford to do any of these things. People shouldn’t make others feel guilty for being in a job they don’t enjoy, people have to work there for survival because of our economic/social system.
