Is Time for Rant! tw: Ableism, Transphobia

Okay, I just have to get a nice little rant out because I just walked away from a conversation with one of the most senseless people I’ve ever come across on tumblr– and that’s saying something!

Sparknotes version: Used an ableist slur, bashed on nonbinary people, and when I ended the conversation for the sake of my mental health, they said I’m the reason people don’t take nb people seriously.

Yeah. Let that sink in.

First off, I’m not really nonbinary ((I’m somewhat genderfluid but I most often am male and prefer to identify as male)), but that’s beside the point.

So let’s just mull this over: I am the reason an already harassed and mocked group of people are harassed and mocked. Mhm. Because I needed to step away from a conversation for my mental health.

And if I were to explicitly mention that I am coming out of a depressive episode and have bad depression/anxiety, they would likely further look down on me or say I’m being a “Special Snowflake”, which is a microaggression towards the neuroatypical. More ableism, yay.

But let’s not digress too far into hypotheticals.

There was one statement that really just made me walk away from that ludicrous conversation. They outright said that “Ableism does not exist”.

Yes, because people have never murdered disabled people or committed genocide on them. Because able-bodied people have never attacked or abused disabled people because they seem like an “easy target”. Because neurotypical people have never made jokes about crippling mental illnesses. Do I even need to go on?

More than anything, I’m fairly speechless right now. It’s taken me a while to type this up, because there comes a point where you hear something so ridiculous that there is just no appropriate response other than to simultaneously laugh and be furious.

So, in closing, apparently ableism does not exist, nonbinary people aren’t real, the sky is green, I have a pet unicorn, and the US has paid off the national debt.

Good golly.
