Yet another well known youtube star jumps on the appropriation bandwagon. Idgi, her sister in law Michelle Phan already appropriated mexican culture, why the hell would she do this now??? Ugh. My culture is not a halloween costume -___-

askelviranow

you do fucking realize that sugar skulls ARE a costume and there is no cultural appropriation to people wearing something that was meant to be a costume to begin with…right? it’s called la catrina and it mocks lower class people trying to dress like high class europeans….its like dressing up like a tourist with a big camera and a sun hat…honey you need to calm down, im fucking mexican and la catrina IS a part of our culture that is a halloween costume. you moron.

kill-weaboos

Actually no it’s not a costume and its not related to Halloween in no type of way shut up

askelviranow

um well im mexican and you’re wrong.  and its associated with day of the dead which is on october 31st, you dumb twat, go fuck yourself and dont tell me what i should find offensive when its fucking NOT

“José Guadalupe Posada created a famous print of a figure he called La Calavera Catrina (“The Elegant Skull”) as a parody of a Mexican upper-class female. Posada’s striking image of a costumed female with a skeleton face has become associated with the Day of the Dead”

OH LOOK IT ORIGINATED AS A COSTUMED FEMALE WITH A PAINTED FACE

“A common symbol of the holiday (day of the dead) is the skull (in Spanish calavera), which celebrants represent in masks, called calacas (colloquial term for skeleton)”

OH LOOK, MASKS…..OH MY LOOK AT HOW ITS WORN AS A FUCKING COSTUME EVEN WHEN CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAY, OH MAN OH MAN DONT WEAR MY CULTURE AS A COSTUME, WHEN THAT PART OF THE CULTURE IS IN FACT, A FUCKING COSTUME YOU GOD DAMN PIECE OF SHIT

you are an ignorant fuck

Halloween and Day of the Dead are not the same thing. Day of the Dead is all about remembering, respecting, and praying for the dead. Halloween is now basically about getting candy for kids and getting drunk and partying in costumes for anyone older. That’s the difference that’s why it’s appropriation when people use it as a costume for Halloween.

If you want to show how to do it then that’s fine you’re Mexican you know what it’s about. Some people will think it’s appropriation and some won’t it’s hard to tell sometimes. so deal with it.

Shoutout to your supporters though I didn’t even know you were bugging out over there until they kept messaging us.

Also, if your supporters are the type to tell people to kill themselves then I think you need to reevaluate your message and who supports you. Maybe you can Wikipedia that too.

This is a Catrina dress for Día de Muertos.

This is a Mesoamerican mask used for funeral rites.

These are people of Guerrero wearing customs of a Jaguar for a special event.

This is a man dressed as Maringuia, a female character for the celebration of Corpus Christi.

These are Coras, an indigenous group from México, disguised for a celebration.

All these people are wearing masks and customs. But they belong to a specific tradition, in a specific context. Mexico has a long tradition of using masks and costumes for its celebrations, wether they are Christian or prehispanic traditions.

Pretending that just because it is a costume, a mask or a caricature is ok to use it for Halloween, is to erase the history behind this costumes, masks and/or caricatures and to trivialize them.

To the Mexicans that are ok with gringos wearing these masks or costumes for Halloween just because you want to comply with them: Shame on you.
