I think one of the things that really bugs me about Mike’s character concept is that you know the creators of Total Drama weren’t aiming to make a good representation of a mental illness. They were not trying to be progressive like a lot of us tried to see Mike as up until TDAS.

Had they actually been aiming for that, they would have tackled something like anxiety or depression, I think. But let’s face it, TD is NOT that kind of show, and that’s not what the writers were going for. From the get-go, they wanted another “zany” character, and it just so happened to work to their whims that their idea of somebody with DID would be zany enough for their show. They planned to use him for comedy from the very beginning. They never aimed to make him a good representation of mental illness.

And once I realized that, it made me completely unable to defend Mike in any way at all.

Ranty Time: I honestly just can’t even the concept of people dating Mike’s alters. I guess to me that just seems really wrong? Not to hate on anyone, but it’d be like going to Mike and being like “Yo, I know you’re the actual personality and you struggle a lot with this crippling disorder, but I like that other personality of yours better so… yeah. Be them.”

Like how shitty would it feel to be Mike in that situation? Plus, how would a relationship even work like that if Mike is the actual personality?

Personally I took the fanon route with my ask blog (ask-mike-and-friends).

I couldn’t stand the finale considering how it treated his MPD, so I go by the fanon that Mal is locked away again, and the other alters are well and fine in Mike’s brain. He is getting proper treatment for his condition, and not being an offensive little shit.

SVETOBA IS CANON

In an official online interview with Mike, Manitoba answered a question, mentioning his wife.

His WIFE.

It is canon that he has a wife.

And who is the only female he could possibly come in contact with?

Svetlana. He can interact with her as he pleases in Mike’s mind, whereas he couldn’t possibly maintain a relationship with someone outside of Mike’s mind.

If you hate Mike’s character because of how the show treated his MPD/DID, I don’t blame you. That shit is offensive.

I still like him as a character, but I can’t defend this finale. I can’t do it, man.

So go on with your Mike hate (just tag it as Mike hate please or anti Mike for people who still like Mike and want to blacklist the hate).

Mike is still my favorite character. I still love him to death.

But just because I love a character doesn’t mean I can’t see the flaws in their development. 

Like holy shit the way they handled his MPD/DID was DISGUSTING. It was a hugeass middle finger to everyone with mental disorders and that is not okay. I understand 100% that people are offended by his character. It’s UNDERSTANDABLE IF THEY STOP LIKING HIM BECAUSE HIS CHARACTER WAS USED TO TRIVIALIZE PEOPLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS.

Also, his alters (a.k.a Svetlana and Manitoba) were great characters (especially Svetlana jfc). It’s just so devastating that they’re just fucking gone, like poof Mike is all better bye everyone.
