Just in case

I’m actually going to reblog a thing just because this is really important.

As someone who has epilepsy and used to have several grand mal seizures a day, I’d also like to add that “offer help” can range anywhere from keeping the person calm to explaining to them where they are and what they were doing to even just telling them they should sit and rest for a while longer (lack or coordination is common, and it can be hard to walk straight or see clearly).

It’s okay for them to take up to a half hour to fully regain their bearings and sort out what they were doing prior to the seizure. Just answer any questions calmly and be there for support.

If they come around and you start to panic or shake them or ask them what the heck is wrong with them they are going to freak out and panic too.

I cannot stress it enough that this is bad.

If someone has a seizure and they come out of it, please. please stay calm.
They are likely disoriented and confused, even if it’s only for a minute or two, and you don’t want them panicking on top of that because they can have another seizure as a result.

IMPORTANT

IMPORTANT because last year a kid in my class had a seizure, none of us even knew he was at risk for them either so just cause you don’t think you know anyone doesn’t mean you don’t

stay safe

I have to stress how important it is to time a seizure. If it lasts more than a few minutes, call an ambulance.

DO NOT CALL THE POLICE. I’m dead fucking serious. I had a grand mal in public once and the POLICE were called and imagine coming out of the seizure, feeling like you got smacked in the head with a sack full of bricks, confused, dazed, in desperate need of some sugar to boost low blood pressure and some DIPSHIT has called the police and I was being threatened with being ‘drunk and disorderly’. It took a phone call to my doctors office to get them to back off. The police cannot properly deal with sick people

Offer help can be:

  • assuring person where they are/what time it is
  • getting them something to drink if they can; seizure burns so much energy and does cause a blood pressure drop
  • getting them safely to transport or a carer
  • getting them some dignity like a blanket/towel [loosing control of your bladder and bowels is fucking horrifying]
  • ensuring they have a way to get home. Someone who has just had a seizure should NEVER DRIVE straight after
  • calling emergency services if you notice any of these symptoms because they may have stroked out.

Why you shouldn’t put anything in someone’s mouth: they will choke. Yes, they may bite their tongue but I can assure you it’s less traumatic than cracking your jaw on someone’s greasy wallet or choking on a spoon.

DO NOT HOLD ANYONE DOWN. Example: someone pinned my right shoulder mid-seizure a few years back and how I have a permanently displaced and clicking shoulder. Let the person flail around, those muscles are out of control and restraining them does cause more damage to the patient and you.

All good points to remember

This post is about seizures and I don’t mean to derail in any way, but I would like to briefly add that this is also a great guide for how to respond to cataplexy episodes and sleep attacks that narcoleptic people like me often experience.

I would go as far to say that it’s best to be treat almost exactly like a seizure! Do not call 911 unless head injury is sustained from a fall. Do not manhandle the person, but remove any glasses and make sure they are breathing and uninjured.

Do not bring unecessary attention to the person; at school, I would ask my teachers to carry on with class as normal, and one friend would be assigned to tend to me and keey an eye on me.

Check for a medical ID!!! A lot of people with epilepsy or narcolepsy have some form of ID indicating this- I personally wear a bracelet.

When the person wakes up or comes to, do not bombard them with questions. Let them know how long they were out, what time it is, and where they are. They may be incredibly groggy for up to a half hour afterwards, though, so repeat this information as often as they ask.

TL;DR This is an excellent resource for epilepsy, but also narcolepsy.

This is a starter list I made with people in mind who A) Don’t have any makeup, and/or B) Have not had access to makeup before. Makeup is expensive, and unfortunately, even this list is beyond what people can comfortably spend. However, for the same price of a palette (most of which will set you back $50+), I’ve compiled a start-to-finish shopping list that includes everything from the makeup to the tools to the cleaning products.

Below the cut is a full list of products + links, a dupe list (most if not all of these items are dupes for high end brands like MAC, NARS, and Make Up For Ever), and a coupon code. Note that for this cart, I am using a current promotion on the E.L.F website; If you are not able to make this order before the promotion expires, don’t worry, because E.L.F has several similar sales every month!

[Also, a quick note: Everything on this list is from E.L.F, one of the few drugstore makeup brands that is 100% vegan and cruelty-free. They also have the highest concentration of high-end dupes. The site/their international sites ship to several countries, but in some cases, it would be less expensive to order through a local online drugstore beauty supplier/on ebay/have a friend in the US ship it to you. I’m not affiliated with E.L.F, I’m just a fan]

For Trans Kids Going Back to School… ((U.S.))

Most of you are already back in school or will be starting school soon. I know it’s a really difficult and stressful time of the year, so here’s some information and tips.

1. Know Your Rights

http://www.advocate.com/politics/transgender/2014/04/29/us-department-education-extends-protections-trans-students

The above article was published on April 29th, 2014. You have legal protection under the United States Department of Education. To quote the statement released by the department’s Office for Civil Rights,

“"Title IX’s sex discrimination prohibition extends to claims of discrimination based on gender identity or failure to conform to stereotypical notions of masculinity or femininity and OCR accepts such complaints for investigation.”“

http://www.takepart.com/article/2014/05/01/discrimination-against-transgender-students

The above article further explains your rights, and depending on which state you live in, you may have additional rights and protections granted to you.

http://hrc-assets.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com//files/assets/resources/school_non-discrimination_laws_062013.pdf

http://hrc-assets.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com//files/assets/resources/antibullying_5-2014.pdf

The above two PDFs cover which states have more extensive laws and ordinances on the protection of transgender students.

2. Tips for When You Go Back to School

-Let your teachers know beforehand what your preferred name is. The easiest way is to give them a note. I’ve seen many "templates” online to aid you in giving this note to your teacher, and I personally like this one:

“Dear [Teacher],

My name is [name] and I will be in your class this term. My legal name does not match my preferred name, and I do not want to be addressed by it. Please only use the name [name], and my correct pronouns, [pronouns]. Thank you, and I look forward to participating in your class this year!

From,

[Name]”

I personally like this because you don’t have to outright tell them you’re trans, which may be helpful for people who aren’t out or just want to leave that unsaid. Also, you can add a note about not referring to you with gendered terms, but the above form is the most basic one, and I either say this to them or slip them a note with this.

-If they call out your legal name ((especially if you’re not out)), do not acknowledge it. If anything, just look at your teacher with a very confused expression, or ask “Who is that?”. That should hopefully be enough to help them realize their error. If they purposefully misgender or refer to you by the incorrect name/pronouns, you should take it up with the principal, if you are in a public school.

-If bathrooms are a danger zone, find one that is unisex. There should be one in nurse’s office, or one reserved for faculty. For the former, it shouldn’t be an issue to use the one in the nurse’s office. If that’s not an option, I would recommend discussing the issue with the principal or another authority figure so that you can use a restroom that you are comfortable in. ((For example, my school doesn’t have a nurse’s office since it’s a private school, but there’s a small cafe on campus that has two single-stall restrooms, and I can just use the men’s room there.))

-If you are bullied or harassed for your gender identity, REPORT IT. If the administration won’t do anything about it, get the word out. These days people are more aware and more willing to stand against transphobia, at least slightly.

Stay safe, and have a great school year!

For anyone who was wondering, this is the packet I printed and gave to my parents. I compiled this together, but none of these are originally mine. I just organized this to help my parents understand. Feel free to use this set of photos to help educate people on transgender people and whatnot. I have more pictures, but this is the basic packet.
