also can i just say that i really love that Alone at Sea covered toxic relationships in a way you never see in media. sometimes abuse isn’t just a villain and a victim. sometimes you both do awful things. sometimes you even crave the abuse. but that doesn’t change what it is: it’s still abuse. and you’re still allowed to stand up for yourself against it.
people are taking lapis’ words as a “confession that she abused jasper.” it’s not. she’s self blaming. this is what victims do. lapis wasn’t innocent, but she didn’t abuse jasper. it was mutually toxic, but jasper is still very visibly the abuser here. stop blaming victims for their symptoms.
Me and @jynxcomplex were hypothesizing after today’s episode and so I’m going to put it here– feel free to add on your own thoughts!
So, the diamonds are behind the corruption of gems, it seems. That part appears to be safe to assume. Now, we also know that the diamonds called everyone to retreat.
We’re thinking that this is because the Homeworld gems were losing the war, hence the retreat. All Homeworld gems boarded their ships… except not all Homeworld gems actually evacuated in time. Centipeetle, her crew, and other gems did not board the ships in time, and were trapped on earth.
We don’t know what the white light was, except that it’s assumed to be what corrupted the gems, and was a weapon of the diamonds’ control. This presumably corrupted every gem left on Earth, making them into the monsters we’ve been seeing since episode one.
Now, one detail to cover is how the Crystal Gems managed to survive. We believe it’s because of Rose’s shield. We’re not sure exactly how strong her shield is, but it can be hypothesized that it would at least be strong enough to protect everyone within a certain radius.
We finished the episode five minute ago, so this is all thrown together hastily. Again, feel free to add onto this!
Okay but real talk I’m glad to see others bring of the connection to the Laramie project with Lars’ real name!!! I read the book about it for one of my courses so my mind immediately thought to the significance of using a unique name like Laramie, especially with that spelling….
I think it’s fascinating how Jasper is pretty much the only gem who, when confronted by her “enemies” doesn’t attack as her first reaction, but instead asks “why”. And not just once, but practically every time.
To Steven: Rose, why do you look like that? Why are you so weak?
To Garnet: You’re both out, and you’re fused again? Why?
To Lapis: What are you doing? (The why implied.)
And yet there are still people who call Jasper a brainless brute. Amazing.
so what you’re saying is that Jasper’s gonna be that kid poking someone (probably) all the time asking “why?”
because jasper would not shut up and stop asking questions about random shit
This reinforces my idea that nose-gems are ruled by instinct and a desire for practical knowledge.
